The ability to non-destructively characterize a metal surface and understand its topography is a powerful tool for understanding many aspects of metal surface behaviour in critical industrial applications, such as contact behavior between two materials.
Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM) facilitates quantitaive measurements of topography parameters by obtaining detailed 3D maps of each surface. Scanning Electron Micorscopy (SEM), in addition, allows detailed assessments of the surface damage. Embedded grit, surface deformation, voids and crecives can all be made clearly visible. Combined with software solutions for automation, these two microscopy techniques help to optain detailed information about almost any surface features in a rapid, precise and accurate way.
